Estee

Estee’s latest trick is opening the drawers under the bed in the master bedroom so she can get under the bed. Our bed is a king-size waterbed frame with cabinet doors and drawers in the base. We had to put magnetic latches on the doors because Estee kept trying to open them and in the middle of the night we’d hear bang, bang, bang as she tried to get the doors open.

Over the past week she has been intently watching me every time I opened the drawers to put something away. Tuesday I noticed one of the drawers open and couldn’t find Estee anywhere. I opened one of the doors and called her and out she popped with a Bbbrrrrppp! Very proud of herself. Yesterday I found my sock drawer open and my socks all mixed up, so I presume she’s been in there as well.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Estee is a Polydactyl cat, so she has a thumb on her fore paws and she can actually use her paws like hands. She has seven claws on her forepaws and six on her hind paws. Even the vet, who has seen Polydactyl’s commented on her large paws. We may have to remove the seventh claw on her forepaws, as they are deep between the main paw and the thumb and the one on her left paw has already caused problems a couple of times. It is large and thick, but so deep in the fur it is hard to get to and keep trimmed.

She has very good balance and every morning waits for Herb to put on his robe, then she climbs on his shoulder and rides out to the kitchen. If you pick her up, she won’t stay in your arms, but immediately climbs onto your shoulder. She doesn’t often lie in our laps, unless I have my electric blanket on, or occasionally when I’m on the computer.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year – 2006

Hopefully everyone had a safe and happy new year.

2005 was an eventful year for us. First, realizing that our old neighborhood was changing, and not for the better, we began house shopping. We finally decided to build a new house on 1 acre in a small development off of one of our favorite motorcycle riding roads. We sold our old house to a broker, so closed on both houses on June 10th and delivered our first load of belongings to the new house that afternoon.

It took two extremely long and exhausting days with the help of three good friends to get everything, not already in storage, moved into our new home. We hired a neighboring teenager to spend a separate long and exhausting day, moving the contents of the rented storage building. Our new mailing address is:

2310 Cross Timbers Drive

McKinney, TX 75069

We actually live in the town of Lowry Crossing, population 900+. We don’t have our own post office but we do have a volunteer fire department and a town hall (currently a trailer until a new town hall is built).

After moving in we had a separate contractor construct a 30’ x 40’ outbuilding with 16’ walls and (2) 12’X14’ roll up doors. The motorhome is now secured inside, protected from the weather and Herb has a large work area for doing maintenance on the vehicles and to work on his projects. Currently he has a $400. 1989 Mercury Cougar Super Coup he is working on. The building has been wired for electricity but we are still waiting for TXU to come out and run power to it.

Estee and Panther-Panther (Panther2) took about 1 week to adjust and 2 weeks to be totally relaxed in our new home. Since we did all of the house flooring in vinyl tile, Estee has fun launching off of the furniture, running up the hall and doing spin outs. She has also discovered that the cabinets in the bathrooms and kitchen are spring loaded and she enjoys playing with them to make noise. Her other favorite pastime (shared by Panther2) is pulling the little white caps off of the door stops, which are springy and make a nice twang sound….especially in the middle of the night. We also recently learned that Estee actually has 7 claws on each of her front paws. We have to keep a close eye on them as they are hard for her to scratch with, so they can over grow & get into the pads of her paw; which is how we learned of their existence.

We still have a lot of boxes in the house, so we didn’t put up a Christmas tree, or decorate for Christmas this year. We also didn’t find our Christmas cards so decided since we hadn’t sent out change of address notices, we would prepare a New Year’s letter instead.

Well, this past weekend we finally began hanging things on the wall. After rearranging the furniture, we put up both of our pool cue racks, then hung one picture in the breakfast/dining area. We are even close to being able to actually play pool on the pool table.

Despite the move, in 2005, we were still able to attend The Republic of Texas motorcycle Rally in Austin (see www.ROTrally.com), the Boo Benefit in Jefferson, Texas & of course rode in The Teddy Bear Run in November. We have also decided to add a sidecar to the Harley & have spent quite a bit of time test riding different rigs; including a Russian built Ural & a show quality trike. Hopefully we will have our set-up by the time riding season is in full swing.

We did get down to Galveston 3 times this year. Labor Day weekend our friends Ed & Sharon Gregory joined us for their first visit to the island. We had our motorhomes side by side at Galveston Island State Park & we enjoyed showing them the many sites, like the WWII submarine Cavalla (see www.galveston.com/beachparks/seawolfpark.shtml). We also got to run Ed’s new Jeep Rubicon around in the mud & sand.
